3-minute Plank Test — Personal Training assessment of the core

Core training in physical fitness is not solely about doing sit-ups and crunches; it is also about promoting balance, stability, and actively engaging those muscles.  When I take a upon a client for an initial assessment, once I finally meet them, one part of the training assessment is training their core and their balance. Part of this test, I put them through only one exercise, and that exercise tells me everything I need to know about their core strength, because if the client fails this test, most likely they will not pass any other personal training assessment.

Why Core Training Is Essential

Throughout my career as a personal trainer, I’ve learned that it is important to start clients with the basics of training. Beginning a fitness journey can feel overwhelming, and many people simply don’t know where to start. The good news is that there are fundamental principles of fitness that anyone can learn and apply.

In this article, I will explain why core training is so important and what should be prioritized when training the core.

The 3-Minute Plank Test

A Personal Training Assessment of the Core

Core training in fitness is not just about doing sit-ups or crunches. True core training focuses on balance, stability, and proper engagement of the muscles that support the spine and body.

When I take on a new client, one of the first things I do during their initial assessment is evaluate their core strength and balance. This gives me insight into how their body functions and where we need to start in their training program.

To assess this, I use a very simple but powerful test: the plank.

The plank may look like a basic exercise, but it reveals a lot about a person’s core stability, endurance, and muscular control. During this assessment, I ask clients to hold a plank position for up to three minutes.

This one exercise tells me almost everything I need to know about a client’s foundational strength. If a client struggles to hold the plank, it usually indicates that their core stability needs to be developed before progressing to more advanced movements.

In many cases, if someone cannot pass this test, they will likely struggle with other fundamental exercises such as squats, lunges, and compound strength movements, because all of these require a strong and stable core.

5  Core Exercises I recommend everyone should Master

While many exercises are available, I believe there are a foundational movements that everyone should learn first. These  exercises build strength and stability that is needed for more advance training.

Mastering these basic movements creates a strong foundation that improves posture, balance, and overall performance in the gym and in everyday life.

1. The Plank

The plank is one of the most effective exercises for building core stability and endurance. It strengthens the abdominal muscles, lower back, and shoulders while teaching the body how to maintain proper alignment.

2. Bird Dog

The bird dog exercise focuses on balance, coordination, and spinal stability. It trains the body to keep the core engaged while the arms and legs move, which is essential for functional strength.

3. Knee Tucks

Knee tucks activate the lower abdominal muscles and help develop core control. This exercise also improves hip flexor strength and coordination.

4. Flutter Kicks

Flutter kicks target the lower abs and hip flexors while also challenging endurance in the core. When performed correctly, they help build strong abdominal control and stability.

5. Glute Bridges

Glute bridges strengthen the glutes, hips, and lower back, which are essential components of a strong core. They help improve pelvic stability and support the spine during movement.

Final Thought

Building a strong core is one of the most important steps in any fitness journey. When these foundational exercises are mastered, it becomes much easier to progress into more advanced strength training and functional movements.

At GS Fitness & Wellness, training begins with mastering the fundamentals so clients can build strength safely, move better, and achieve lasting results.
